Traditional Chinese Musical Instrument Performance

Last week, we were so honored to have the famous Chinese flute artist Mrs. Jing Tian to give performance to Keats students. Our students were very looking forward to such a musical feast because the artist is very famous in Yunnan.

At 2pm on February 14, the performance was held on time. Students who were interested in Chinese traditional music came to the school early to wait for the performance to start. After Mrs. Tian arrived, she kindly started to talk to Keats students briefly and introduced the background of the Chinese flute. Mrs. Tian first performed a famous Chinese song “Jasmine” to give Keats students a brief feeling about what Chinese flute sounds like. Soon the students were attracted by the special and beautiful sound. The students stood to applaud the unforgettable song. Mrs. Tian then gave a presentation about the history of the Chinese flute. Then she showed different types of flute and performed how to express one’s motion through different songs.

The teachers at Keats also prepared some activities for our students. For example, listen to the music and speak out its name, and listen to the music and guess the motion behind it. Besides performing the Chinese flute, Mrs. Tian also performed Bawu and Dongxiao, which are very similar to the flute. The students were amazed at how beautiful Chinese traditional music is. It was also a great opportunity to get to know Chinese musical instrument. The last section was to ask questions. Students asked many related questions such as “Can you play the western flute?” “How much is the most expensive flute?” “Which country do you go often to give performances?” Mrs. Tian answered the questions one by one. One of the students inquired about studying the Chinese flute with Mrs. Tian. As a conclusion, Mrs. Tian performed a song named Trip to Gusu to end this meaningful event.

Students feel like they have not fully enjoyed the Chinese flute and invited Mrs. Tian to play a western song My Heart Will Go On, to appreciate a pop song through traditional musical instrument. Mrs. Tian promised Keats students that she will invited other artists to come to Keats to play Guzheng and Pipa at the end of the event. We all very look forward to our next event.

I think Kunming is a great city, the weather is really good. I really like Keats school and found it is very organized. The teachers here are very good. They have a coffee shop and new classrooms, a new lounge area here now, so you can chill out with your friends and practice your spoken Chinese with natives. If you’re considering coming to Keats to study, I would really recommend it. It’s the best place to learn Mandarin and I think it will be a great experience for you.

I think the Chinese learning environment here is great. The teaching methods are also very interactive and fun. What I particularly enjoy here is the fact that my teacher does not stick to the textbook. We spend a lot of time discussing general topics, such as Chinese culture, world news, typical expressions used by local people. We also discuss social and economic topics.

HSK Test Preparation Course

Last year I started studying Chinese at University. The reason that I came here is that currently, I’m preparing for the HSK 5 test. Also, I heard that this is one of the best schools to study Mandarin in China. After I came here I realized that Kunming is a pretty cool city to live in and with regards to the teachers’ teaching methods, I think they’re very professional. And I think the language environment is good so now I’m ready to take the HSK 5.
