Place to Visit in Zhangjiajie - Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

This is the main park where you see the famous pillar-like mountains from the Avatar movies. You can spend days hiking the many trails through the green valleys and looking up at these incredible rock formations. For great views, visit the Golden Whip Stream or take a cable car up for a panorama of the entire area. It’s a massive, beautiful place that feels like another planet, and it’s the essential Zhangjiajie experience for any visitor.

Place to Visit in Zhangjiajie - Tianmen Mountain

Tianmen Mountain offers thrilling man-made sights right next to the city. The long cable car ride up is an attraction itself. At the top, you can walk on narrow paths attached to the cliffside and look down through glass walkways. The main feature is the huge natural hole in the mountain, called Heaven’s Gate. You can see it after a bus ride up the winding road with 99 turns, making for an exciting and scenic day trip.

Place to Visit in Zhangjiajie - Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

This spot is all about adventure. The main draw is the Glass Bridge, a long walkway with a transparent glass floor suspended high above the canyon. Walking across it is a real adrenaline rush as you see straight down to the ground. Beyond the bridge, the Grand Canyon itself is a peaceful and beautiful place for a walk past streams and waterfalls. It’s a perfect mix of natural scenery and a modern, thrilling experience.

Place to Visit Nearby - Fenghuang Ancient Town

Just a few hours from Zhangjiajie, step into the picture-perfect Fenghuang Ancient Town. This well-preserved town lets you experience classic China. Stroll along the riverbank past traditional wooden stilt houses and old flagstone streets. You can walk across the beautiful stone bridges, take a relaxing boat ride on the peaceful Tuo River, and see the local shops. The town is especially charming when the red lanterns glow at night. It’s the perfect, relaxed contrast to the mountains—a place to slow down and soak in centuries of history and a peaceful atmosphere.

We have arranged a day trip for you to visit Fenghuang Ancient Town.

Cuisine in Zhangjiajie - Tujia Smoked Bacon (La Rou)

This is a signature dish of the local Tujia people. High-quality pork is cured with salt and spices for weeks, then slowly smoked over firewood and cypress branches for a unique, rich flavor. The result is a firm, dark red bacon with a strong smoky and salty taste. It’s typically steamed or stir-fried with vegetables like garlic sprouts or hot peppers. The fat is transparent and not greasy, while the lean meat is wonderfully flavorful. It’s a hearty, preserved food that captures the essence of traditional Tujia cooking and mountain life.

Cuisine in Zhangjiajie - Zhangjiajie Fermented Bean Curd (Xue Doufu)

Despite its nickname “Blood Tofu,” this is not made with blood. It’s a unique sausage-like dish created by mixing fresh pig’s blood, minced meat, and tofu. The mixture is then kneaded, shaped into fist-sized balls or patties, and smoked, similar to the bacon. The smoking process gives it a dark brown crust and a firm, crumbly texture. When sliced and steamed or fried, it has a deep, savory, and complex flavor. It’s a local specialty that might look challenging but is a true taste of the region’s resourceful culinary heritage.

Cuisine in Zhangjiajie - Stir-Fried Ciba (Chao Ciba)

A unique and hearty Tujia vegetarian specialty, Ciba are glutinous rice cakes pounded until smooth and chewy. Unlike the sweet versions found elsewhere, here they are sliced and pan-fried until the outside is golden and crispy while the inside remains soft and stretchy. They are then stir-fried with local ingredients like chopped garlic chives, wood ear mushrooms, and dried chili peppers. The dish offers a satisfying contrast of textures—crispy, chewy, and soft—with a savory, mildly spicy flavor profile. It’s a filling and comforting dish that showcases the ingenuity of mountain cuisine.

What's the year around temperature in Zhangjiajie?

Spring & Autumn are the sweet spots. Think March-May and September-November. Temperatures are mild (roughly 13-22°C / 55-72°F), and you have a better chance for clear skies and comfortable hiking. These are the best times for photography and avoiding the biggest crowds.

Summer (June-August) is warm, green, and busy. Expect daytime temps around 24-30°C (75-86°F) with high humidity and frequent rain showers. The misty peaks can look incredible, but it can also feel hot and crowded.

Winter (December-February) is cold and quiet. Temperatures often sit between 3-10°C (37-50°F). While it can be damp, this is your chance to see the sandstone pillars dusted with snow, which is absolutely magical.

The Bottom Line: Pack layers and a good rain jacket! The weather at the mountain tops is often 5-10 degrees cooler and foggier than down in the city.

Where to eat in Zhangjiajie?

For Local Flavors & a Lively Vibe:
Head to the Dayong Old Town (Dayong Fu Cheng) in the city center. This isn’t just a tourist spot—it’s where locals go to eat. The streets are packed with small restaurants and food stalls. This is the best place to try authentic Tujia cuisine like:

  • Sanxiaguo (Three Ingredients Pot): A hearty, flavorful dry pot with your choice of meat and veggies.
  • Tujia Smoked Bacon: Incredibly aromatic bacon, a local specialty.
  • Various river fish and wild mountain vegetables.

It’s bustling, affordable, and the energy is fantastic in the evening.

For Convenience After a Long Hike:
Right outside the main entrances of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (especially at the Zhangjiajie Village entrance), you’ll find a cluster of small, simple restaurants. They’re perfect for a quick, hot meal after exploring. The food is straightforward—fried rice, noodles, and local dishes. Don’t expect gourmet, but it’s convenient, filling, and you can refuel without traveling back to the city.

For a Unique Experience with a View:
Up in the Tianzi Mountain or Yangjiajie scenic areas, there are simple eateries perched on the cliffs. Sitting down for a bowl of hot noodles or a pre-made lunch box while surrounded by those mind-blowing pillar views is an experience you can’t get anywhere else.

Intensive One-on-One Chinese Classes

This is my second time coming. Last year, I also came for about 12 weeks. This time I came for 13 weeks of a summer program in China. The reason why I particularly want to come to this school was because of the one-on-one classes. I was able to increase my level and learn Chinese more quickly than in group classes. If I have a chance again to come next year, I certainly will.

I think Kunming is a great city, the weather is really good. I really like Keats school and found it is very organized. The teachers here are very good. They have a coffee shop and new classrooms, a new lounge area here now, so you can chill out with your friends and practice your spoken Chinese with natives. If you’re considering coming to Keats to study, I would really recommend it. It’s the best place to learn Mandarin and I think it will be a great experience for you.
