Paper Cutting – A Great Way to Learn Chinese Culture

Paper cutting is an art of cutting paper designs. Although the art has evolved throughout the world, paper cutting in China has its unique designs and culture. You must wonder how Chinese people can cut a dragon on paper just as lively as a painting. Many Keats students also showed great interest in learning Chinese paper cutting. Therefore, we have arranged a cultural activity to teach our students this amazing art. On Sunday afternoon, students and teachers arrived on time. We invited one of Keats teachers Ms. Zhao who is knowledgeable about Chinese paper cutting. She also brought her works of art. Ms. Zhao gave a thorough introduction of the art history and its origin. After the appreciation of the teacher’s works, Keats students were amazed at the beauty her works and the skills she has and couldn’t wait to get started.

Ms. Zhao had already prepared a great number of colourful pieces of paper for students to use before the event started. Each student was assigned with a pair of scissors. We started with the very basic Chinese characters which were symmetrical such as 囍. Just within a few minutes, students can already create their own paper cutting. Next, Ms. Zhao would like to increase the difficulty of paper cutting. It turned out the students would need more tools to complete their works. They would have to use a knife and a flat wooden board. This did not intimidate the students who were still very excited about their next work. With the instruction and the help from the teacher, the students finally finished their second work. The students were too proud of themselves that they cannot stop creating more wonderful works.

Both the teacher and the students enjoyed this event and had lots of fun. Dominica who studied at Keats for her second time told us she liked this event a lot and it greatly helped her to understand Chinese culture.

Keats arranges group activity every Sunday. If you are interested in joining us, please contact your advisor to sign up when we post the even on the board.

I am a graduate student working on my doctorate degree at Columbia University. We were able to really focus on speaking especially interview-style speaking and we are able to really up my Chinese reading and writing skills, so when I go back to Columbia, I can take formal Chinese classes. It has been a really good experience and I really love my teacher.

Before I came to Keats School, I had no confidence in my Chinese proficiency. I did not have the confidence to speak Mandarin Chinese and chat with Chinese people. However, after 4 months of study at Keats, I become more and more confident in speaking Chinese now. Studying Chinese in China at Keats School has been the best decision I have ever made. There are many games in the class, and my teacher’s teaching methods are also very interesting. My experience at Keats School has changed my view of China and Chinese people.

I think the Chinese learning environment here is great. The teaching methods are also very interactive and fun. What I particularly enjoy here is the fact that my teacher does not stick to the textbook. We spend a lot of time discussing general topics, such as Chinese culture, world news, typical expressions used by local people. We also discuss social and economic topics.

Intensive One-on-One Chinese Classes

In the one-to-one intensive Chinese course, you can choose the learning method you like. The small group Chinese class in China at Keats follows the HSK textbook. Teachers often collect feedback from the students, teachers listen to our requirements and opinions. I felt that my oral level is better than before .

Intensive One-on-One Chinese Classes

The best part of the school is the patience the instructors had and the time to focus on the fundamentals like pronunciation. I think it is very easy to skip over those and go to vocabulary. But by learning the pronunciation, I feel like it helped me gain a better understanding of the language.

It is very convenient to come to Kunming from Thailand. I really like my Chinese class and my Chinese improved a lot in a few months. There are many benefits of learning Chinese. The best thing I like about Keats is that it is in Kunming, a city with eternal spring. There is so much to see in Kunming and you will love this city after you come.
