There are many places in Kunming that attract tourists from all over the world. Kunming also attracts a group of special guests – seagulls each year, because Kunming is richly endowed by nature and climate. Around 30 years ago, the first group of seagulls from Siberia flew to Kunming in winter and found Kunming to be such a warm place and thus they were reluctant to leave. Since then, seagulls from Siberia spend their winter in Kunming every November. Admiring the seagulls and feeding them have become a kind of welfare to many Kunmingnese. There are several famous seagull gathering places in Kunming. They are the Green Lake located in the city center of Kunming, Daguan Park and Minority Village in the west, and the Dianchi Lake.
Students who learn Chinese in China in the northern part are jealous of students in Kunming because they will not be bothered by the severe cold. By contrast, they can enjoy the beautiful sunshine almost every day in Kunming while they play with the seagulls.
The Dianchi Lake is one of the popular places for outdoor lessons at Keats during the winter. Ms. Yi Lan chose to spend the last day’s lesson at the Dianchi Lake as a gift to her student. Ms. Yi Lan told us that her student studied very hard and learned many Chinese characters in a short time. She was very happy to see the progress her student made in such a short time. Ms. Yi Lan’s student would fly to Beijing on the second day and he was very upset that he would leave Kunming. Ms. Yi Lan took her student to the Dianchi Lake to feel the warm winter before he got hit by the cold weather in Beijing.
The student was very excited to see the seagulls flying back and forth on the lake. Ms. Yi Lan bought some bread for the seagulls and fed them together with her students. After that, they walked along the bank of the lake and appreciated the beauty of the Western Hills. Ms. Yi Lan spent a very special and unforgettable day with her student, who told us that he could come to study at Keats again in the future. There are many interesting places in Kunming, which create many outdoor learning opportunities for Keats students to feel Chinese culture. After we shared Ms. Yi Lan’s outdoor lesson with other students, we received lots of interests in spending a wonderful and relaxed afternoon at the Dianchi Lake with the students and the teachers.
