Learn Chinese in China with Keats School

Learning to Play Mahjong

Recently, there are a lot of students studying Chinese at Keats, some of who are higher level students, and many of which have studied at Keats before.  We always welcome new students to our school, and thank the students who choose to study here multiple times.

We recently became aware that some students were interested in learning to play Mahjong, so as part of this weekend’s activities, we are going to have to teachers teach our students how to play.  When our students saw the announcement, they all excitedly hurried to sign up to learn this traditional Chinese game.

This Sunday afternoon, when our students arrive, they will find the teachers have already prepared everything they need to play Mahjong-a table, four chairs, and most importantly, a Mahjong set.  Although Mahjong has in total 108 pieces, many of which have different images on them, it isn’t as complex as you might imagine.  Our teachers will have prepared well to teach this game, using pictures and English instructions to explain the rules, so all of our students can easily understand.  As the teachers explain the rules, the students will try to start playing. When you play Mahjong for the first time, there are many steps you have to follow, on top of paying attention to what everyone else is doing, so it can be tricky for first time players to grasp, but in the past, all of our students were excited to meet the challenge.

One of our students from Italy, Anna, told us, she was very happy to be able to learn this game.  Besides working her brain, she could also have fun and compete with a lot of her friends, so winning every time wasn’t very important, as long as after learning the game, she could rely on her strategy and a bit of luck to win just once.

I have to say it’s tons of fun. I have been here for 2 weeks. Not knowing what it was gonna be like, I was more than surprised at how great it is. The teachers are great, they are understanding. They do a Chinese language program that suits just you. The location is perfect for learning Chinese in China.

Intensive One-on-One Chinese Classes

So during my first week at Keats, I didn’t dare to speak any Chinese words. I found out that my Chinese level quickly improved since then. Although I have many options to study in China, for example, some other schools have homestay, I found I could immerse myself and fully focus on learning Chinese by staying at Keats.

I really enjoy coming here because it is like kind of a home for me. It is a great environment to learn Mandarin Chinese in China and meet great people from all over the world. Everyone here is extremely friendly. Kunming has a really nice climate. It is a very good mix of the modern city and also a lot of historic Chinese culture. Probably got the cleanest air in China and possibly the cleanest water too. I invite you to come to study Chinese in Kunming.

I think Kunming is a great city, the weather is really good. I really like Keats school and found it is very organized. The teachers here are very good. They have a coffee shop and new classrooms, a new lounge area here now, so you can chill out with your friends and practice your spoken Chinese with natives. If you’re considering coming to Keats to study, I would really recommend it. It’s the best place to learn Mandarin and I think it will be a great experience for you.

I come to Kunming because I think the environment in Kunming is better and I heard that Keats School is better. I like the small group Chinese class because my classmates study hard and our teachers are very good. I like the teaching method of Keats because I like the activities at Keats. I think Yunnan is a particularly beautiful Chinese province.

I think the Chinese learning environment here is great. The teaching methods are also very interactive and fun. What I particularly enjoy here is the fact that my teacher does not stick to the textbook. We spend a lot of time discussing general topics, such as Chinese culture, world news, typical expressions used by local people. We also discuss social and economic topics.

Intensive One-on-One Chinese Classes

I’ve been at Keats school and Kunming now for one month doing the one-on-one Chinese lessons with two different teachers. I really enjoy it. Both of my teachers are very friendly and patient. They really helped me to improve my Chinese, both of my reading and speaking. I really enjoy studying Chinese in Kunming as well. This city is really beautiful and the weather is nice, the air is clean. It’s one of the best cities in China to study Chinese.

The place is very cool. I am with a great group of people in my class, so coming to classes is very enjoyable. It is fun, we have a lot of discussions, games, activities. Our teachers are also very good, very supportive. Learning Chinese is intimidating at the start because you have so many questions. But I would advise coming to Keats because the atmosphere for learning is great. It is very relaxing. I would recommend the school.
