Group Dinner to Celebrate Spring Festival at Keats

It is widely known that the Spring Festival is the most important festival in China. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, this year’s Spring Festival fell on the day of Jan 31st, which is earlier than before. Keats School invited all the teachers and students to celebrate the Spring Festival on Jan 24th.

At 6pm, we gathered together at the school and then walked to a Chinese restaurant on Dongfengdong Road. The restaurant was full of people greeting each other and sending out their best wishes for the new year. You may wonder why people go to a restaurant to have dinner instead of having the dinner at home. Isn’t the New Year’s Eve Dinner supposed to be taken at home? It used to be but now the tradition has changed a bit. In the past, all family members make dumplings together. However, now all the restaurants are fully booked one month in advance and it is really hard to find a table if you just walk in. Now Chinese people are getting rich and eating in a restaurant shows the affluence of life. They can order whatever they like to give a treat to themselves for a year of hardworking. Chinese people do not need to worry about hassles of preparing the food and washing the dishes afterwards. After the dinner at a restaurant, families go back home and watch the annual gala show on CCTV.

Our tables were next to the windows on the 2nd floor. When all the students and teachers arrived, all the tasty food was already there, awaiting for the celebration. We ordered the famous Sweet and Sour Fish, Yunnan-style steamed chicken and braised beef with brown sauce, etc. The teachers introduced the names of all the Chinese dishes and their ways of cooking, as well as their importance in celebrating the Spring Festival. Chatting and eating, the students enjoyed the dinner and this could be a special experience while they study Chinese in China. Students and teachers also took pictures to appreciate the special moment.

Finally, we expressed our wishes to all the students and everyone made a wish for the year of 2014. We believe the group dinner can be special to all of us and we will hold more events like this to help the students get to know Chinese language and Chinese culture.

Intensive One-on-One Chinese Classes

At Keats, I have a lot of opportunities to practice what I have learned. I really like this school, because I can learn Chinese in one-on-one style, so I think this is the best immersion program in China and my teacher is the best teacher. I feel that without my teacher, my Chinese will definitely not improve so much. I’m very happy because, at Keats, I have improved my Chinese significantly.

I can’t tell you how much I liked it. The thing I liked about the teachers and the teaching method is that there is so much flexibility. The other thing I liked about the teaching is the combination of classic textbook learning and going outside. I loved it! I like getting to know other students. Everybody shared the same goal and that’s making their Chinese better. Kunming is a big city, but it is very safe to live here. Another thing I liked about Keats is the idea that people here help you. I can’t recommend it enough. I think it was a valuable experience. Looking forward to coming back!

Intensive One-on-One Chinese Classes

I really enjoy this place because we have private Mandarin lessons. I took the 6-hour program, 4 hours in the morning, 2 in the afternoon. Even though it is quite a lot, the teaching is complimentary. This is very helpful because I could review what I did before and learn new things. My 2 teachers are fantastic. We live in the school, so it is convenient. It is interesting to me to meet people from all over the world.

Small Group Chinese Class

The visa application was really straightforward, because Keats School helps us a lot with that. Keats has a big emphasis on conversational practice, so we learn a lot of vocabulary and daily life plans which is very convenient for us to go around town and speak with Chinese people which is the whole point of learning Chinese in China.

The teachers at Keats know how to read the students and how to help students learn Chinese language easily. They know the level of the students. I am a slow learner, but they managed to adapt to my learning. They made the class very fun, very exciting. I am pleased that not only I got to learn the culture and the language, but I also got to make amazing friends, really unbelievable, Chinese friends and European friends, American friends, from all over the world.

I am a graduate student working on my doctorate degree at Columbia University. We were able to really focus on speaking especially interview-style speaking and we are able to really up my Chinese reading and writing skills, so when I go back to Columbia, I can take formal Chinese classes. It has been a really good experience and I really love my teacher.
