Mountain God

As the Chinese proverb goes that “Those living on a mountain live off the mountain”. Mountain God is a deity widely worshipped in China. It is especially adored by people living in the mountainous areas or the forests. They are convinced that only by the blessing of Mountain God, can they live a prosperous life. Among the “Five Sacred Mountains”, Mount Tai is regarded as the foremost one. It was also the principal place where the emperors would pay homage to heaven in the Fengshan Sacrifices. Meanwhile, it has been viewed as a path leading to heaven and immortality. In the old days, people believed that there was spirit after one’s death, and all spirits were ruled by the God of Mount Tai. The 28th day of the 3rd lunar month in the Chinese calendar is said to be the birthday of the God. Temples were built and currently, when it comes to the birthday of “Eastern Mount Emperor”, many pilgrims still go to Mount Tai. In the Chinese legend—Granting Titles to Gods, The Mountain God helped the protagonist to grow capable through suffering.
