Actually, in ancient China when matchmaker is a necessary part of a marriage, matchmakers were mixed group of people. Alongside with official matchmakers, the majority of matchmakers were married women who worked as peddlers or who worked in service industries such as fruit sellers, tailors, needle sellers, jewellery sellers, barbers, nannies, brokers, creditors and restaurant owners. They had a wide association with different kinds of people and enjoyed more freedom than others to visit people’s houses. Since they were married women, there were fewer restrictions preventing them from communicating with secluded girls. Some of them were part-time matchmakers and some were professional matchmakers. In “Outlaws of the Marsh”, the teashop owner Ms. Wang introduced herself like this, “I mainly work as a matchmaker, but I’m also a broker, a midwife, a lover’s go-between, and a bawd…” Most matchmakers worked in a variety of professions.
