How to Provide Supports for Overseas Mandarin Chinese Language Teaching

The self-development of Chinese teaching requests us to build up Chinese language program in China. Theoretically speaking, development of each language program should keep pace with the times, solve all kinds of problems in teaching practice and absorb the latest knowledge and results in this fields and related fields so that the establishment of disciplines can be completed successively.

Although Chinese teaching has had tens of years’ history and accumulated many achievements, generally speaking it is not mature enough. Our cognition to the noumenon law of Chinese language, the teaching law and acquisition law of Chinese language and character are still adequate and the mature teaching models and classical textbooks in every level are not too much. Thus, we should speed up the step of internationalization and establish Chinese language program in China.

It is a pity that the position of Chinese language program in China needs to be curtained further. According to our observation and feelings, the whole program has not been completely understood or accepted by domestic and overseas academic fields and social fields. To get the international discipline position, theChinese language program in China still needs a long and difficult process.

Reasons are that this Chinese language program in China requires the domestic and overseas academic fields and social fields to overcome some misunderstandings despite that it needs further establishment, development and completion. What we can do is to enhance the self-development of Chinese language program in China. The rich achievement of this program is not only good for the development of Chinese teaching, but also good for the correction of some international prejudice for Chinese.

One thing which needs us to rethink is that our research key point is only on the domestic Chinese teaching. Teaching outlines, testing outlines, textbook and teaching approaches, courses setting and teaching models are all formed for domestic Chinese teaching. Of course, it is right. But we should also be clear that no matter it is in the present or in the future, people who come to learn Chinese in China are less than the overseas students. Overseas Chinese teaching has been the battleground. The establishment of Chinese language program in China should be the model for the overseas Chinese teaching, for the internationalization of overseas Chinese teaching depends on the quality and effect of domestic Chinese teaching foundation.

The history of Chinese teaching as a discipline is not too long. The question of the position of Chinese language always exists objectively. Seeing from the history, Chinese teaching has been serving for Sinology and the purpose of learning Chinese in China is for studying Chinese ancient books, therefore, some Chinese language schools are even teaching ancient Chinese language.

In recent twenty years, as the development of Chinese economy, students’ motivation of learning Chinese has transformed from the psychology of academic and explorative into practical. That is to say, Chinese teaching in overseas universities have transformed from the attachment of Sinology into the language teaching of modern Chinese language as independent status. And most Chinese language teaching institutes are developed recent years so that they have not been completely independent or mature. Without the support of Chinese language program in China, the effect of overseas Chinese teaching can’t be guaranteed, not even overseas Chinese teaching can enter into the mainstream foreign language education teams.

For this situation, as a member of Chinese teaching teams, I strongly suggest to establishing the completeChinese language program in China and promoting it to grow mature so that the motherland of Chinese language can provide stable supports for overseas Chinese teaching system. In this way, the efficiency of learning Chinese language for overseas students can be improved and Chinese culture can be spread all over the world.

We believe that there will be more and more people interested in learning Chinese language and Chinese culture and Chinese language can be an international language in the future.
