Earth Gods

If you have seen the Chinese classical work “Journey to the West”, you may notice every time when the Monkey King comes to a new place, he will knock the ground with his Jinggu-bang (golden-cudgel, its weapon) to ask the local Earth God about the situation of the place. Such a local Earth God is a deity who is in charge of the affairs of a particular village. The Earth God (also Tu Di Gong or Tu Di Ye in Chinese) is always a short but cute and humorous old man. He derived from the ancient people’s worship of earth. In the agricultural society, men treated earth with reverence. The form of Chinese character “tu (土 earth)” symbolizes a bulging heap of earth on the ground. Earth God was worshipped in Earth God Temples, which were usually small but scattered all over the villages and towns, which probably relate to his humble status.
