Concept of Marriage in Ancient China

In ancient China, there were various concepts of marriage. The most important one is the two families should have equal socioeconomic status. There is no free love. The parents lead the whole affair, and arrange all the things well in advance. For a good couple, the man is talented and the woman is beautiful and nice. Even today, people use such a concept to praise a good couple—Nan cai nv mao(talented man and nice-looking woman). In Chinese, people use such a simile to describe the situation that a man isn’t matching the woman well—A toad wants to eat the swan. And for a vulgar woman marry a very rich or privileged family—A sparrow fly to the top of the tree and becomes a phoenix.
