It is a custom for people wearing scented sachets on the Dragon Boat Festival. Some bags are extremely delicate and feature ingenious designs such as a goldfish, a little white bunny, a litter tiger, a kitten, a bottle gourd with beautiful and exaggerating patterns, and lively and sleek lines. Scented sachets came into being before the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC).

Women wore ornaments made of five-colored threads on their heads meant that they were married; the ornaments were called “scented ribbons”. In the Southern and Northern Dynasties, “scented ribbons” were developed into “scented sachets”, which were hung inside the four corners of beds or on the walls as ornaments and air fresheners. The sachets are stuffed with spices and send out pleasant fragrance. They were also worn by aristocrats and officials as display of their nobility and sophistication. And the scented sachets became more and more popular and delicate.

During the Dragon Boat Festival, when it gets warmer, flies and mosquitoes are everywhere and epidemics may spread rapidly. In that case, wearing a scented sachet may kill gems, get rid of the smell of perspiration and refresh the spirit. Wearing such a sachet not only honors the old customs, but also reflects the hopes of the common people for happiness and good luck.
