The nest house, carved house, half caved house and so on are the reflection of the primitives’ history in the mountains. In Chinese culture, the concept that the mountain can produce plenty Qi and accumulate the Qi firmly in the sense of blessing has improved the shape of mountain to be a basic feature in the traditional Chinese architecture. We can find the trace of mountain from the internal constitution, the design of the house’s outlook, and the overall landscape planning for the residential area. In the sense that gain the harmony between the natural environment and human beings through the imagery of mountain, the theory that “生气”(producing Qi) depends on the terrain is reasonable. In fact, the traditional residents have lived with a healthy life such as stilted house built with dry column, carved house, the traditional quadrangles. And the experts of architecture had concluded that a lot.
However, the falsehood in the theory of “生气说” (producing the Qi) is as plain as the nose on your face. Among them, the most absurd opinion is “人受体于父母,本骸得气,遗体受荫” which is recorded in the Zang Shu written by Guo Pu. It means that human being are given birth by their parents. And the body will be full of Qi. Nevertheless, the dead body will be feed by the Yin. People had developed many costumes according to this concept. They shaped the tomb as the mountain so that the tomb may produce Qi and the dead body would bless the decedents. And it also affected the tomb in choosing place and construction.
This is concept is not only the invention from Guo Pu, but also from other groups. The coffin in Han Dynasty which was found in the Ma Wang Dui, Chang Sha city, was decorated with the patterns that the fog lingers upon the mountains. On the one side of the coffin towards the death’s head, they used the patterns of deer so that the death can be benefit for the generations by generations after buried in the mountain. The deer “鹿” has the same pronunciation with the “禄” which is the lucky Qi in Chinese culture.
At first, the primitives though that the human came from the mountains so that they would went back to the mountain after death. However, the early belief about the ancestor and fairies decorated or developed this concept. Therefore, they believed that if they prayed the ancestors, the dead ancestors may bless the whole clan. At that time, one clan or several clan were formed a small society. Thus, they buried the dead and prayed so that the human society can develop well. However, it can not be concluded into the superstition.
From then on, the theory of Wei Qi had come into being. It advocated that the universe and human beings had the same origin. The condition of Ze Ju (bury included) had improved with the expanding of the activity scope. What’s more, the development of the private ownership and the idea of the property had affected the on the conditions of Ze Ju. Therefore, they decorated the bomb found in the Ma Wang Dui like that.
However, for the theory that the Qi produces everything on the earth, it is just an explanation in the sense of philosophy about the producing of universe. It has widely spread in Chinese culture. It does not include that the dead body can receive the Qi. From the essence, they did all these because they accepted behaviors of their ancestor so that they intended to carry on the spirit from their ancestors. And the later generations hope to be encouraged by that spirit. We can understand the feeling that the later generations admire their ancestor in the same way. However, it can not be related to bury for receiving the Qi.
The theory of “生气”(producing the Qi) has applied to the Feng Shui culture. Yet, it has bad influence on it because it has disobeyed the common sense of bury in ancient China. They conducted the origin theory of “生气” (producing the Qi) in twisted way in order to benefit from it. Maybe this is because of the influence of the superstition and the misleading claims.
