The group of words 来历and 来源 are applied to indicate the origin of something but have some tint differences that the foreign learners need to tell apart. When we use 来历, we usually mean the history or background of things or persons, implying the conditions of things or people in the past like 这个人有来历. 来源has the similar meaning with origin in English, indicating the place that things or persons come from like 经济来源. When you go to school to study in China, teachers would tell you that 来源can also function as a verb and collocated with the preposition于, for instance, 这种植物来源于非洲沙漠地区.
Another group of words that the foreign students need to know is 来临and到来, both of which indicate something is coming. For 来临, it is usually used to express something is close and coming, mostly used for the natural phenomena or certain kinds of abstract things. It is more often used as written language and not proper to use to indicate people. You can say 暑假已经来临or春天来临了. However, 到来means to arrive and is usually used to express the abstract things such as people, happiness or chance. With wider application scope, 到来can be used for people. accordingly, you can make sentences like 客人的到来打破了家里的宁静.
Let’s move our attention to the differences between the words 来往and交往, which are much easier for those who have come to Chinese to learn Chinese language for a long time to distinguish. The former one has two levels of meanings, the first of which is to come and go like街上来往的人很多 and another one is to communicate with each other. For example, 爸爸不许我和坏朋友交往. However, the latter one indicates the good communicative relationships between two persons. You can say这里修理路面,禁止一切车辆来往. In addition, 交往has the reduplication form of 来来往往to indicate to come and go.
