Matchmakers were supposed to be paid when they succeeded in arranging a marriage. If it happened that the in-laws were on good terms, the couple enjoyed a happy married life and the wife gave birth to a male progeny, the matchmaker would enjoy long-term benefits. When it came to festivals, birthdays or the New Year, everyone connected to the couple had to give matchmaker money as present if she went to visit them.

In old times, according to the matrimonial custom in northern Anhui Province, on such occasions as making marriage proposals, ascertaining the prospective couple’s birth dates, comparing the prospective couple’s horoscopes, exchanging betrothal gifts, choosing an auspicious wedding day and fetching the bride in a sedan chair, the matchmaker would be invited to preside over the proceedings. Both families had to host a feast for the matchmaker and give her money. The wedding was not to be held until they had invited the matchmaker eight times.
