Problems in Teaching and Using Simplified and Complex Chinese Characters

It is inevitable that there are some problems in the teaching and application of the simplified and complex Chinese characters. The problems of teaching the simplified and complex Chinese characters were in overseas areas in the 1980s, after which the mainland China opened to the outside world. After that time, the Chinese teachers went from the mainland to the foreign countries were getting more. As a result, more students demanded to learn the simplified Chinese characters, thus causing some problems in teaching.

The first problem lies in the teaching materials of Chinese language. Before the 1980s, in the foreign countries, taking the United States as an example, the characters in Chinese language teaching materials were mostly the complex characters. When there are two kinds of students with different requirements, the teaching materials should take the forms of both the complex characters and the simplified characters. It would strengthen the burden of the students who learn Mandarin and also was a waste of paper if all contents in the materials like new words, grammar explanation and exercise were all written in two forms of characters.

Another problem should be the problem of writing. Since teachers are facing the students of different requirements, they may think both character forms should be written but they often confused which kind should be written. In addition, the students are also feel confused which kind of form they are writing because there are two forms in the books. Last but not least, the explanation of the character structure is helpful to understand and write Chinese characters. However, different students learn various characters forms and there will be many limits when explaining the character structures, only those characters with no difference between simplified form and complex form.

In addition, there are also some problems in the aspect of using the simplified and complex Chinese characters, which exist in both in China and overseas countries. Since the 1950s, the simplified Chinese characters have been using in the mainland China but the complex characters are allowed to remain in some special situations like the stone tablets in tourist attractions and the classical books. Therefore, students who attend to Chinese school to study Mandarin are told to write the complex characters. In this case, many mistakes are made in writing the complex characters because they do not write them usually. The mistakes also lay in the transformation between the simplified and complex characters.
