Yin Zhai Culture Has Taken an Important Role in Chinese Culture

If you study Chinese in China, you may have met some famous tombs about the ancient emperors. The Yin Zhai (tomb) Feng Shui culture and Yang Zhai Feng Shui originate from the same concept. At the same time, both these two kind of Feng Shui culture in Chinese culture take the same ideal condition. They believe that the best surroundings of Feng Shui have to protect it from the wind and accumulate Qi. Therefore, the landscape mode of the Yin Zhai is required by the same demands as Yang Zhai. And we have introduced the Yin Zhai and Yang Zhai in the former context for the foreign students who learn Chinese in China. The Feng Shui book Zang Jing has described it as : 夫葬,以左青龙,右白虎,前为朱雀,后为玄武。玄武垂头,朱雀翎舞,青龙蜿蜒,白虎驯付. In another words, it has described the typical basin surroundings.

The successive tombs of the emperors are the best way to show the typical Feng Shui of Yin Zhai. By learning Chinese in China, it is easy for you to set many examples for it. For example, the eighteen tombs for the emperors in Tang Dynasty are located on the north of the Wei River. Most of the tombs among them are oriented south and north. There are always mountains on the both sides of the tombs. If you are studying Chinese in China, you can get more survey date of it. According to the survey data of the tombs, the tombs had been surrounded by the square walls. And the four gates Qing Long, Bai Hu, Zhu Que, and Xuan Wu had been separately set in the east, west, south and north.

And there is another example for the Feng Shui culture in Chinese culture. It is general for the students who study Chinese in China to seen this type of tombs, if you travel around the whole country. The tomb of Yan emperor also built completely according to the requirement of Feng Shui culture. The book Guang Shi Di Li Zhi Meng has described the tomb of Yan emperor from Feng Shui culture aspect like this: 皇帝葬于桥山,在大河之南,脉自积石逾江,衍者丰饶而广被也. It has shown the tomb’s advantages in Feng Shui culture. After learning Chinese in China, you may figure out the advantages according to the Feng Shui culture.

On the other hand, if you have general understanding of Feng Shui by learning Chinese in China, you find out the truth of them. In fact, when the tomb of the emperor built, the method of looking for Long and observing the Long Mai had not been put forward yet. As the description of the tomb, it seems like building according to Feng Shui method, while the design of the tomb originated from the experience of the primitives in choosing living places. With studying Chinese in China, we have learned that the primitives believed that the human beings came from the mountains. Therefore, it was inevitable to return to mountains after death. Thus, we can figure out that although the Feng Shui of Yin Zhai has been criticized by the successive scholars, it has been approve that it has brought something from the experience from the primitives in choosing the address of the tombs.

On the other hand, since there is someone accumulating Qi based on the tombs, there is someone to decrease the Qi by destroying the tombs. By learning Chinese in China, you may give some example about it now. For example, the emperor in the late Ming Dynasty had sent the people to excavate the tombs of the Jin Dynasty in order to destroy the Jin’s Long Mai and Long Qi. However, it did not work. If you have learnt Chinese in China, it is easy for you to get the opposite examples about it.

On the contrary, the emperor of Qing Dynasty had set the rules to protect the thirteen tombs built in Ming Dynasty. All the tombs which had been damaged in the wars were been restored in Qing Dynasty. As a result, the Ming Dynasty still decayed at last, because of the emperor of Ming Dynasty did not know how to govern the common people.
