Dumplings feature in many Chinese sayings, one being, “Dumplings are better than delicious food, lying down in better than simple comfort.” Other sayings with similar references are, “Dumplings as you leave, noodles when you return,” and “On the 1st, eat the dumplings, on the 2nd, eat noodles”.

The 1st saying describes the lack of materials and the desires of the Chinese people when it was first coined.

The 2nd saying reflects life during China’s isolation, when people were worried about going on long journeys. In some places, people believe dumplings can protect a person from evil. When communication systems weren’t advanced, dumplings were symbols of family blessings for people going on journey.

The 3rd saying originates from the Spring Festival. On the 1st day of the New Year, eating dumplings means you will certainly live a rich life in the coming year. To the Chinese mind, dumplings are one of the best foods to reflect China’s food culture. Also, once Chinese people invite a foreigner to eat dumplings with them, it means the guest is accepted as a friend. “Jiaozi (dumpling) is not really food; it is a ritual-an affirmation f community, not private nourishment but public celebration, food not for the body, but for the soul”.
