From the Hill Overlooking the River Living in the Hilly Places

The primitives who lived in the mountains before, while lived in the plat ground later. In Chinese culture, “阴” and “阳” are very important conception. They were not afraid to build “阳宅” which is for the living person to live in with the images basing on the hill and overlooking the river. At the same time, they built the “阴宅” for the dead. What’s more, they hoped to get the continuously blessing from the mountain because of the attached bond that they used to live in the mountain.

Why did the primitives say goodbye to the caves in which were the places for their ancestors living? Many reasons from Chinese culture file for it can be inferred. It was hard to see the sunlight in the deep-founded caves all round. Therefore it was in the low temperature and too cold. In some caves, it was hard to protect from leaking and wet. On the other hand, it was not a healthy environment for living in. With the increasing number of the family members, the small cave was too small for the whole clan to live in. And these small caves were hard to be separated. Therefore, the small caves were bad for living together. All these caves which were not built with branches and main tree trunks, grass, mud and so on by the primitive can not be compared with the later buildings in the cozy condition.

However, the caves were dry and cool in the high mountains and natural barriers. And any other buildings can not be like this. Especially when the primitives faced the disasters of flood, invading of beasts and enemies and so on, they can not resist. And the mountains can protect them from these dangerous situations and make them feel safe.

In Chinese culture, “陵阜而居”(living in the hilly places) makes the primitives feel safe in living. On the other hand, the cozy life also includes the rich contents such as the factors of living, clothes, food, house and traffic. It was necessary for the primitives to try their best to obtain the abundance of food for living and breeding the next generations. Thus, they had to guarantee the adequate water sources, proper temperature and humid climate for the forest and plants. Productive grasslands, prosperous forests and so on were the necessary conditions for the primitives to develop. At the same time, the primitives had began to be concerned with the primitive processing industries such as the primitive agriculture, making pottery, and weaving when they continued to hunt and gather.

There is no doubt about that it is hard to find these cozy and natural environments to live in the mountains, desert, prairie, and ocean and so on. The remote Chinese culture and history has been approved by the archaeology achievements. During the tough period that apes developed into the primitives, the primitives had found out their first treasure place in hills and valleys in the nature by their animal instinct (the survival of the fittest). Since 1700,000 years ago, the primitives developed from obscuration into the civilization. The most traces of the development were found out in the complicated geographical environments which were the transition from massif to valleys. There are some experts hold the opinion that the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River is the cradle of Chinese Ethnic Peoples. And it depends on how old the baby is in the cradle and how to delineate this area. In fact, most part of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River were uninhabited till Spring and Autumn Period. Due to the changes of Yellow River, the traces of human being’s activities were rarely found in the overflow plain. On the other hand, the traces were often found in the alluvial fan of Tai Hang Mountain by the rivers eroding and river ladder. And that is the transition zone from water to the land. Recent years, another group of experts have put forward to some views that the middle and lower Yangtze River is the origin of Chinese Ethnic Peoples. By the opinion of xengsin, maybe it is much closer to the true history.
