Born in the year of 1269, Huang lived a poor life since his parents all died when he was young. When he was ten years old, he was adopted by Huang Le in Yongjia of Zhejiang province. It was said that Huang Le was ninety years old when he adopted the child. Huang Le renamed him as Huang Gongwang because the child seemed clever and flexible.
When Huang Gongwang was only about thirteen years old, he participated in the wonder child examination in the county. After a long time hard study and diligence, he mastered a wide range of knowledge and also some particular skills. Later, he became not only a famous person in painting field, but also achieved outstanding attainments in the academic area. Most of his landscape paintings were created after he was seventy years old.
