Classroom Mandarin Chinese Teaching Skills and Games

Talking about how to learn Mandarin well, teaching approach of Chinese teachers is definitely an important factor. The better the teacher’s teaching approach is, the better the students will learn. Today our free Chinese lessons will introduce several good teaching approaches of teaching words for Chinese teachersto make your class more interesting and effective.

The first approach aims to make students who learn Chinese in China concentrate on class, strengthen the activity of their brains and help students to grasp new words as soon as possible.

Teacher can write the new characters or words of text down on cards. The cards should be big enough so that every student can see the characters on the cards clearly. After teaching all the new words in one text, teacher can wipe out the characters or words on the blackboard and then lift up a card until every student can recognize the character or word on the card and read out. Then teacher show the second, the third or the fourth card one by one. When every word is read by students who learn Mandarin, teacher can pick one of the cards arbitrarily and show the students to see who the first one to recognize the word is.

Then show the next card to students immediately. In the third round of the game, teacher can ask students to read the word and make a sentence or phrase with this word every time when the teacher lifts a card. For example, when the teacher was teaching in the qualified Mandarin program, she wanted to teach the word “时候” to students. The teacher asked students to make sentences or phrases with it. The students said, “我看电视的时候,喜欢吃东西。” Other students said some phrases, “上课的时候”, “写字的时候”, “吃饭的时候”, “去西安旅行的时候” and “去医院看病的时候”.

Teachers of the Chinese school in China remind you that most Chinese courses will teach new words followed by texts so that students will feel quite difficult in reading texts, for they have just learnt the new words for only once and their impression is not deep enough. If teacher can strengthen students’ memory in time, it will be quite effective for students to grasp new words quickly.

Expressions of numbers are always a part which students will make mistakes when study Chinese language. Teachers should strengthen their speed of reflection in daily teaching.

Here is the teaching approach suggested by the teacher of the learning Mandarin Chinese courses. Teacher can read the numbers directly one by one and asks students to say out the digits of the numbers then the teacher reads again and the whole class should repeat once. For example,
Teacher says: 三三幺 students should say:三百三十一
幺零五幺 一千零五十一
四六零零七 四万六千零七
二零零四五零 二十万零四百五十

On the contrary, another way is that teacher reads the multi-digit numbers and the students who study in China read the single numbers one by one, then the teacher reads again and the whole class should repeat once. If all of the students can speak English, teacher can also try to read numbers in English and ask students to translate them into Chinese. For example,
Teacher can read: one o nine students should say:一零九or 幺零九
Double o seven 零零七
Two four o six eight 二四零六八
Or the teacher can read: five hundred and nine; students should say:五百零九
Fifty-seven thousand four; 五万七千四百五十三

This game can be used to teach students who learn Chinese language in China in elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. And it can cultivate the ability of analysis, ability of association and the ability of restoring and memorizing.
