Chinese Minority – Pumi People

The origin of Pumi people in China is the nomadic people Diqiang branch in the northwest of China. When you come to study Mandarin in China, you may be told Pumi means the white people. You should know they mainly live in NUjiang prefecture and Lijiang city of Yunnan province. Some of them are in Sichuan Province. According to the fourth population census, the population was 29,657.

The language spoken by Pumi people belongs to the Sino-Tibetan Languages. In the past, they use the language that is spelled with Tibetan language. However, the students who learn Chinese in China should know most Pumi people use Chinese language now. The main work they do is farming and sometimes cottage craft. The main crops are corn, wheat, barley and so on. When you study Chinese in China, you may hear that Pumi people worship the deity. Some of them even believe in Lamaism and Taoism.

Another important thing you should know about Pumi people when you learn Chinese in China is that there are many taboos when you get along with them. They are not allowed to hit dog. People shouldn’t carry a gun on the back but should hold in the hand when they enter the door.
