Colorful painting in Chinese building

Colorful painting is one of the most original designs in Chinese building. It is originally for protecting wood structure against dump and corrosion and insect-eating, afterwards the press of it is just the adornment. After Song Dynasty, the colorful paintings have become the indispensable adornment of palace. It is divided into 3 grades. The highest grade is the Hexi colorful painting. The center of the painting is made up of various pictures of dragons or phoenix and using the flower pattern to fill the space; both sides of the paintings use “《》”to frame and daub them with some shining coating to make them look very magnificent. The 2nd grade is the circle colorful painting. It uses the simplified form of flowers with the eddy petals; the two sides may frame with gliding powder. It is generally used in the less important palace or temples. The lowest grade is the coloraul painting of Su’s style. The picture covers landscape, person story, flowers, birds, fish and insects. The both sides use “《》” or “()” to frame. With the colorful painting, the architecture embodies different feelings.
