Three friends in winter

Ancient Chinese called the pine trees, the bamboo and the plum flowers the “three friends in winter”. As we know, pine trees are evergreen, cold-resistant and lives a long life. It is a symbol of longevity and firmness. Bamboo is tall and erect, delicate and simple and evergreen in all the four seasons. It is called a “gentleman”. Being firm, straight, and hollow inside, it is well be used to refer to a gentleman’s characters: firm, moral, upright and modest. Also people thought that bamboo is a kind of plant that shows safety. For plum flowers, it blossoms in the winter. Throughout the history in China, plum has always taken the fancy of Chinese scholars because of its clear fragrance and blossom in early spring when other flowers are still withered. Since it has five petals, plum is also called “wufu”(five happiness)—pleasantness, happiness, longevity, smoothness and peace. The three friends in winter always become the materials for people to praise firmness, peace, longevity and other related qualities no matter in writing, painting and crafts-making.
