National Grand Theater Perform the Original Opera Song of Canal

The first national opera Song of Canal holds the first public performance in Beijing during the period from June 21st to 24th, which is the period of the Dragon Boat Festival. A piece of news comes from some students who study in Mandarin language courses in China that this national opera is created by the National Grand Theater after spending two years’ time. With the background of the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal with the long history of 2500 years, this opera tells the moving stories between the scholars in southern China Qin Xiaosheng and the ladies Shui Honglian and Guan Yanyan in Wanli Period of Ming Dynasty.

After telling this story, it also shows and praises the great love of laying down one’s life for a just cause and sacrificing one’s own interests for the sale of others. At the same time, it provides a historical picture scroll with magnificent style and scale. In the past, the National Grand Theater has presented three original large operas with the theme of Chinese culture, namely, the Beauty Xi Shi, the Women Teacher in Village and the Orphan of Zhao Family. This is the fourth one but has some differences with the former three operas.

The Song of Canal does not use the bel canto in the western classical operas just like the past but applies the singing style with strong and distinctive Chinese national singing type. The four goden prize winners of the China Central Television Yong Singing Competition Lei Jia, Wang Hongwei, Wang Li and Sun Shuo not only perform their fantastic singing skills, but also affect the general audiences with the devotion of deep feeling. The rhythm which is exquisite and pleasant to listen to shows the extraordinary artistic charm of the national melody.

On one hand, the famous composer Yin Qing absorbs the creation method and technique in western operas. On the other hand, much attention is paid to indicate the lingering charm of the national melody. Teachers in qualified Mandarin program may tell you that the importance is not totally attached to the appearance but to the spirit. After combining the melodiousness of folk music with the tension of opera together, the artist creates the rich sound effect to the audiences. At the same time, the audiences can also feel comfortable when listening to the simple but lively rhythm. Therefore, many audiences are intoxicated in the beautiful music.
