Zhao Qizheng Spread China’s Public Diplomacy

During the period of London Book Fair, Zhao Qizheng, the director of Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference attended to the exhibition on April 17th, publicizing his concept of public diplomacy. Some of the foreign students who pay attention to the news when they study at Chinese school in China may know he also brought the English version of his two books to the exhibition.

The English version of the book named “transnational dialogue—wisdom of public diplomacy” which is published by New World Press of China International Publishing Group and the book named “public diplomacy and cross-cultural communication” are the conclusion of his interpretation and practice on the public diplomacy concept. The former one is written after the deep exchanges with the famous leaders in politic, academy and business fields in the United States, Britain and Japan such as Kissinger, Kuhn and Alistair Michie in more than one year’s time. Therefore, the words on this book are full of wisdom and humor and give readers inspiration and reflection.

The latter book is the abstract of his thoughts, words and actions about the public diplomacy in recent 20 years. As a matter of fact, those who study Mandarin online may be told that this book is also the worthwhile fragments or images during the process of China stepping into the world and the world knowing more about China. Zhao Qizheng said he recognized the significance of developing public diplomacy in China from action to knowledge.

In his view, international communication is an important part of public diplomacy. And Chinese activities of guest of honor in London Book Fair is the wonderful stage of processing public diplomacy, showing Chinese cultural charm as well as enhancing the exchanges and understanding between different cultures.

According to the perspective of Professor Michael Hoy who is the vice president of Liverpool University, both sides need to understand each other first and build friendship then they can be friends. And in this process, the frank public diplomacy is the first step of understanding. From this perspective, some foreigners who study in Chinese leaning programs can see the importance of the English version of his two books. It is also reported that Zhao Qizheng would gave lectures in Britain as well as other countries to spread the ideas of China‘s public diplomacy.
