Chinese Expressions还…呢, 还不就是… and 还好

Just like the English words and expressions, some of the expressions in Chinese language need the foreign learners who learn Chinese in China to understand by communicating with local Chinese people. One of the common expressions in Chinese is 还…呢, which is usually used yo mean that the other party’s speech or acts do not deserve his title. For instance, 你还专家呢,连基本概念都没搞清楚. The collocated words are usually noun phrases. When people use this pattern, it carries the tone of dissatisfaction or contempt like 这么点儿忙都不想帮,还朋友呢.

The one just mentioned above is used to describe the inconformity of actions and title. However, id you intend to indicate that there is no difference between the present case or action and the previous one, you can use 还不就是…, meaning that something is still in some certain situations. You can say我周末还不就是看看电视、洗洗衣服什么的. Sometimes, the word就in the middle can be omitted. In addition, it carries the tone of not caring or disapproving like我们开会还不是不要迟到啦、工作时间不许聊天啦,没什么新鲜的.

In order to achieve better Chinese learning, you should not only study in Mandarin learning courses, more importantly, to talk with the Chinese people. During the process, the phrase 还好 should be useful, which is often applied to mean that it is all right or just so-so. Let’s take a dialogue as an example. 甲:您最近身体怎么样?乙:还好,就是血压有时候高一点儿.

Similar with 还好, 还可以is also frequently used to indicate something is neither good nor bad. When you study in intensive Mandarin course in China, you may hear 我新租的房子还可以,环境不错,交通也很方便. You should pay attention that sometimes it is used positively, meaning “it is comparatively good” like这种饮料的味道还可以,你尝尝.
