Writing of Chinese Characters

Chinese characters are not only the written signs that carry the information, but also a kind of culture themselves. For Chinese nation, Chinese characters are a kind of cohesive force. At the same time of enjoying the amazing structures of Chinese characters, you can appreciate the contents of the characters, the wisdom of history and the realm of the philosophy. Just as we all know, Chinese characters have a long history and never broke off in the several thousand years. Chinese people have been always worshipping the characters since the ancient times.

In ancient China, calligraphy was not only the symbol of men of letters, but also the skill that many people intended to master. In the period of imperial examinations, the importance of calligraphy seemed much more obvious. Some of the students who study in Chinese school in China might be told that much attention was attached to the calligraphy and people were supposed to respect the calligraphers from the children to the emperors because the whole society measures the skill in calligraphy to measure the knowledge and status of a person.

However, in modern times, with the coming of the internet times, more and more people gradually forget how to write beautiful Chinese characters with their hands, especially to use the brush pen to write the characters. When many departments or enterprises are recruiting new staffs, they express that the Chinese characters written by the college students seem really terrible. Indeed, many college students are good at making the beautiful electronic resume. However, when they are asked to fill forms by handwriting, the characters look terrible. What’s worse, some of them even forget how to write some simple characters.

In the internet times, some people think it is needless to learn the calligraphy and some people often think the characters written by brush pen and even pen have lost their meanings. Therefore, they say it is a good thing for the aged people to write with brush pen to entertain but needless for young people to waste the time. Some experts said many Chinese schools in foreign countries like Japan and Singapore regard calligraphy as a required course. In this case, it seems important for Chinese people to learn calligraphy. In the same sense, when the foreigners study Mandarin Chinese, writing Chinese characters by hand is also important for them to feel the culture in characters and improve learning efficiency.
