Visiting the Plum Mountain in Nanchang of Jiangxi Province

Located in the western suburb of Nanchang city, the Plum Mountain Scenic Area is characterized by the towering mountain ranges and the densely covered forests as well as the beautiful sceneries in all four seasons and the enjoyable climate conditions. It is also called the small Lushan Mountain, the original name of which was Feihong Mountain. As early as in the early stage of Han Dynasty, the post road was built. When it came to the late period, the governor of Nanchang County retired from the public life to the western Feihong Mountain in order to resist the dictatorship of Wang Mang.

In order to commemorate his exemplary conduct and nobility of character, people of the later generations built a Plum Immortal Altar on the mountain and the name of Feihong Mountain was changed into Plum Mountain. If you go to study in Chinese school in China, teachers would tell you that many famous ministers such as Zhang Jiuling, Zhang Shangying, Zhou Bida, Wang Anshi and Zhang Wei as well as the famous men of letters like Ou Yangxiu, Zeng Gong, Huang Tingjian, Chen Shidao and Tang Xianzu and the famous general Yue Fei ever visited there. As a result, many poems and inscriptions and cultural landscapes were remained.

In addition, the Plum Mountain is one of the sacred places of Buddhism and Daoism, with as many as 136 temples, pavilions and altars. The temple named as Zhaiyan Temple is the top one of the most famous eight temples in the Western Mountain. At the very beginning, there were many relics related to Buddhism and Daoism such as the copper lotus platform, copper bottle, copper censer and pot with the height of eight chi.

Besides the famous Taoist abbey Taiping Temple, there was a gingko tree of long history, with the height of three meters and the chest circumference of 7.5 meters. One attracting scenic spot for the foreign students who study in free Chinese lessons is the Ziyang Palace at the top of the mountain. The founding father of the Eastern Han Dynasty ever visited there. At present, the stone house is still remained.

There are numerous peaks in the Plum Mountain, each of which has their own characteristics. The top of the Plum Mountain is decorated by the bamboo forest and the Lion Peak is featured by the precipitous cliffs while Ziyang Peak is elegant. The best site for having panoramic view should be Luohan Ridge.
