The Drung nationality mainly concentrates in the Valley of Drung River in Gongshan Drung and Nu Autonomous County in Northwestern Yunnan. In the past, the ethnic group did not have a generally accepted name. after the founding of New China, according to their characteristics and wishes, the ethnic group was officially named as Drung nationality. In the Drung minority area, the winding Drung River rushes continually among the high mountains. In the winter the mountains are closed off, but it is quite rainy and moist in summer.

For a thousand of years, the Drung River valley has been semi-isolated from the outside world, and the features of the last stage of the primitive society are still visibly found there, drungs engage in the slash-and-burn agriculture. They use their Drung language, which is a member of the Sino-Tibetan language family and has no written form, and some Drungs speak Chinese. Every Drung man is a master hunter with unique skills. The primitive bow, bamboo tack and rope buckles are tools to overcome wild animals by hands. The capture brought back to the village from fishing and hunting, are equally distributed among villagers according to their traditional custom, for they believe that it is ignominious to enjoy food all by oneself. Those who get fish or meat often give them to the orphans or patients in the village. Drungs respect the elderly and care for children, and everybody lives together in peace and harmony. “Nobody pockets the picking on the road as his own for everything has its owner”; this is the fine tradition the Drung observe strictly.
