Task-based Chinese Language Teaching

The task-based language teaching is beneficial to help foreigners to study Chinese. The study about it started from the 1980s. At that time, Prabhu held an experiment named “Bangalore Project”  in Bangalore of India. He proposed to give students tasks and help them learn in practice. Foreigners can study Chinesemore efficient if it is used in teaching. It attracted the attention of the second language teaching field because it regarded task as the classroom teaching design for the first time.

Prabhu believed that language acquisition needs no systematic language input and repeated practice, but only to create the language contexts for students to do communicative activity. With assigned tasks, learners can learn to speak Chinese purposefully. This theory became mature in the 1990s, which was called “the age of tasks”. If we replace the traditional syllabus with procedural syllabus or syllabus of tasks and center on the contents, we can help foreigners study Chinese effectively. Therefore, we need to make more efforts to realize this goal.

In brief, the task based language teaching will bring great efficiency for foreigners to learn Chinese language. Chinese language teachers can apply it to the teaching properly.
