In recent years, Chinese government attaches more and more importance to the Chinese cultural promotion and development. Some scholars from abroad who love Chinese culture also propose to promote the cultural development. Professor Leopold Leeb who comes from Austria is one of them. He graduated from Philosophy Department of Beijing University with Doctor’s Degree in the year of 1999 and he has been to China for17 years. At present, he is the professor of comparative literature and world literature major in Renmin University of China.
The professor researches mainly the language and thoughts in ancient Europe, the traditional Christian culture and comparative idioms. As a humorous and outgoing scholar, Professor Leopold Leeb always keeps very strong interest in Chinese culture. According to him, the Chinese philosophy is really mysterious. His teachers in university ever told that the root of oriental culture is in China and he satisfies the wish of studying in China for his teachers because his teachers failed to come to China.
Professor has been committed to the cultural exchanges between China and the foreign countries and he particularly concerns the cultural differences just like he said “I like exploring the differences between them”. Some students who learn Mandarin Chinese may be told that he often make comparison between Chinese culture and Latin culture during the lecturing so that to pay attention to train Chinese students’ ability of foreign culture appreciation and have a better understanding in western countries and even the world.
He said that he is planning to write a dictionary about the comparative rhetoric to promote the comparative culture in the academic field. He also gave some ideas about the cultural development in China. In his eyes, the hardware facilities of Chinese culture are really good but the software needs to be improved. And he hopes Chinese government encourages children to gain the ability of absorbing foreign culture and creative development from their young age.
When mentioning the promotion of Chinese culture, the professor think that Chinese government should also encourage the children learn the second foreign language and even the third foreign language except for English.
