There are three main types of clothing in China in the latest dozens of years: western-style clothes, traditional Chinese garments and National clothes. All of these exist together. Over the past two years in China, some of the younger generation has promoted wearing Han clothes. These clothes are billowy, with wide sleeves and loose fitting bottom and are considered to best represent the Han ethnic group of China. People who support wearing these clothes have the motto, “To restore Chinese culture, clothes lead the way!”

In August of 2007, Shanghai’s apparel business promoted a new type of men’s clothing called, “National clothes”. The collar of the “National clothes” is in the form of traditional Chinese collars and the shirt front has five buttons to symbolize the deep emotions of the Chinese Republic. There are four buttons on the cuffs of the sleeves which symbolizes the Chinese saying, “All corners of the land.” It is symbolic of the Chinese attitude for inclusiveness.
