Since the aged are highly respected in China, the birthday celebration for them is attached with great importance. Generally birthdays over 55th are called “Shou”(longevity), especially the multiples of ten named “Zheng shou”(integer age of longevity). Men don’t celebrate 10th birthday and women don’t celebrate their 9th, because in the southern dialects the word ten sounds the same with thief and nine with shrew. The longevity celebration is always arranged by the children or the grandchildren of the aged, who is called “god of longevity” on the birthday. Relatives, younger generations and friends of the family will bring parents to the celebration. The traditional presents are longevity scroll, longevity couplets, longevity candles, longevity peaches, longevity noodles and longevity cakes. Longevity scrolls and couplets are the long sink scroll with auspicious words, such as “Happiness as immense as the water in the eastern sea, and life as long as the pine on the Southern Mountain” written on it. When you are eating the longevity noodles, each guest gives some noodles from their own bowls to the “god of longevity”, which means “increasing longevity”. But the bowl cannot be full, as “full longevity” means completion and the end of the longevity.
