Both“或者” and “还是” mean selective relations in Chinese. They mean that to choose one from two or more people, issues and things which have coordinating relation. They will be translated as “or”. For this reason, overseas Chinese learners will feel confused that when they should use “或者” and when they should use “还是” when they study how to speak Chinese.

From the four sentences above, we can find that the first and the second sentences are selective sentence of interrogatory. In Chinese, we use “还是”as the translation of “or”. While the third and the fourth sentences are selective sentence of affirmation. We use “或者”as the translation of “or”.

Through the four model sentences we can know that although “or” can be used in both selective sentence of interrogatory and selective sentence of affirmation in English, Chinese expression is different from English. We use “还是”in interrogative sentence while “或者”in affirmative Chinese sentence.
