Lesson 27 – Elementary – Use 丢 And 为 in the Blank Filling Task

When the foreign students are taking intensive Mandarin course in China, they often confront the reading assignments which are related to the choosing of the right words in right sentences. The task is hard as well as challenging. When the foreign students are doing such assignments, they should at least know something about the meaning or the word class of the given words which are used to fill in the blanks. If the foreign students know clear of the meaning of the given words and the specific usage of each word, this kind of questions can be solved easily.

Now let’s see some exercises to complete the blank filling task. The words given are 丢,半天,为,放,给,京剧迷,好and着. The respective literal meaning of the words is missing, for a while, for, put, for somebody, Beijing operas fans, good or well and 着 means something has been done. Though the respective meaning of the words is analyzed, the meaning of the words may change according to the context. Thus, the students should figure out the respective specific meaning of the words.

The first word 丢should be placed at the last sentence for there is a phrase which reads 丢三落四in Chinese to indicate the forgetfulness of a person. Thus, the sentence is 你怎么了,最近总是丢三落四的. The meaning of the sentence is that the speaker asks the person the reason for the forgetfulness in recent days. the second word 半天should be placed at the fifth sentence for the context of the sentence is that the person is looking for something. Thus, the word 半天should be placed in the blank to mean the duration of the looking process. The students can find the clue in the context and associate with the meaning of the word when they attend Mandarin language courses in China.

According to the methods above, the word 为should be placed in the seventh sentence to mean in order to. The meaning of the sentence is that in order to help his friends, he goes out without having the meal. The word 放should be placed in the first sentence to form the sentence whose meaning is where have you put my passport. The word 给should be put in the third sentence to form the sentence whose meaning is I have returned the book to you. The word 京剧迷should be filled in the sixth sentence since the word 不少should be followed by a noun and the only noun in the given words is 京剧迷. The word 好 should be placed in the second sentence while the word 着should be put in the fourth sentence.
