When the foreign students are learning Chinese, they should pay attention to some certain adverbs. The adverbs are used to express different emotions and tones. The adverbs have different kinds which include the adverb of time, place, manner, degree and interrogative adverb. The verb is used to modify the verb, the adjective and the whole sentence. Thus, according to the introduction of the adverb, the students will have a brief understanding of the usage of the adverb. The students in intensive Mandarin course in China will have the classes which include the introduction of the adverb. Let’s take two words as example. The words are莫非and 一一.

Let’s take 莫非as an example. The word is an adverb to express two kinds of tones. The first kind of the adverb 莫非 is to express the tone of speculation and is equivalent to 是不是. For example, in sentence like 这家酒楼突然歇业了，莫非出了什么事? The meaning of the sentence is that the restaurant suddenly closed, could it be that it had encountered something? The speculation of the sentence is that the relationship between the closing of the restaurant and some mishap.

The second kind of tone is to express the same function of rhetorical question. It can be equal to 难道,难道说 and it can not be collocated with 不成. One example is 连一份简单的设计都做不了，莫非你的大学白念了不成? The meaning of the sentence is that such a simple design is out of your ability, could it be said that you have wasted your time in university? 
The adverb 一一is used to express the sequential order of the actions and behaviors. 一一in English means one by one. It can be used to express the things done are in order. For example, 我把明细账一一报给母亲. I give specific accounts one by one to my mother. The sequential order makes the accounts more specific and more clearly. Another example will deepen your understanding. 答辩委员会的专家们就论文的内容一一提出问题. The experts in the reply committee raised questions on the contents of the thesis one by one. The adverb 一一 is used to express the sequential order of the questioning action.

If the students are to take HSK preparation program in China, they should pay attention to the usage of the adverbs. The students should also know the tone of the adverbs and properly apply the adverb into sentence.
