Lesson 24 – Advanced – What’s the Meaning of 倒 and 准 ?

In the process of Chinese language learning, foreign students might often see the character 倒 in the sentences like你说得倒轻松,自己试试就知道刷漆也是个技术活了. As an adverb, 倒has several applications as follows. The first one usage that students who study in volunteer programs in China need to know is indicate something is just the opposite of the fact or the some common senses. You can say房子看上去倒不错,但房间朝向不好.

In some cases, it can be applied to indicate something happens unexpectedly such as我随便写的一篇文章,老师倒很赏识. In addition, it can be applied to show the transition in the sentences. In this cases, the words after 倒are usually some positive meanings. Therefore, it is often used to form a kind of contradiction between the contents before and after 倒. When it is used to imply the concession, it is placed in the former clause and the latter one usually has 可是、但是、就是 and 不过. For example, 我倒是一直想去趟西藏,可是抽不出时间. The last but not least function of 倒is to smooth the tone.

Another important language point that the teachers in one-on-one Chinese learning programs would teach you is 准, which is an adverb to indicate some certain conditions or results will produce or happen definitely. If you intend to express that the medicines that the doctors prescribed will definitely cure the diseases, you can say这位医生开的药方准能药到病除.

In the daily communication life, you might often use the pattern …居多, which is applied to indicate certain group of people or things take the most proportion. As a result, the part before is usually has the elements for limiting something. Sometimes, it is collocated with the preposition 以. For instance, 明清时期的文人才子,似乎祖籍江南一带的居多. We can see it is very useful in the daily communication and conversation.
