Lesson 22 – Advanced – Consolidating Grammar Points of 各自 and Adjective Reduplication

The learning of Chinese words is the first step to acquire Chinese language. However, after memorizing a lot of Chinese words, it is still possible for some learners to fail to express what they intend to speak because the grammar points are also important to connect the words they have learned together to express the complete meanings. For example, the word 各自 is a pronoun often used in daily conversations to stand for each one person himself. Accordingly, you can make sentence like 朋友们约好去逛街,各自买了满意的东西.

The language phenomenon of adjective reduplication in Chinese language is often seen for those students who volunteer in China. First of all, they need to make clear of this structure. For the monosyllabic adjectives, the reduplication form is AA style like 红红and轻轻. The reduplication form of the disyllabic adjectives is AABB form such as 高高兴兴and漂漂亮亮. The reduplicated adjectives can function as attribute, adverbial, predicate, complement in sentence, usually collocated with 的or 地.

Let’s take two examples to illustrate the two forms of reduplicated adjectives. We can say小叶喝了一杯浓浓的咖啡and 李大伟接了电话就匆匆忙忙地赶过来了. At the same time, much attention need to be paid to the reduplicated adjectives is that they are not modified by the adverb of degree and also can‘t be negated by 不. That is to say, it is incorrect to say很认认真真的学生and不高高大大.

In addition, the expression 诸如此类 is also important for the students who learn Mandarin Chinese to master. It is usually applied to connect the previous part and placed after the examples taken, meaning there are many more of such type. For instance, 庙会上又说相声的,有演杂技的,诸如此类,都是传统节目. Of course, sometimes it can be also used as 诸如…之类. Besides, when you see 一度, you should know it is an adverb means at one time like今年上半年这个牌子的冰箱一度跃居销售排行的首位.
