Lesson 21 – Advanced –Usage of 总归 and 何尝

For most Chinese language learners who got internships in China, they all have studied for a long time and reached a higher level in Chinese language. However, Chinese language leaning is endless and it is important for them to continue to study more language points to help them speak fluent Chinese in the working process. For example, the word 总归 may be helpful for them, which is an adverb to indicate that things will developed into this no matter what kind of things have been experienced. For instance, 孩子在成长的过程中都会遭遇成长的烦恼,但他们总归会成熟起来.

Of course, the word 何尝also appears very frequently in the written form of Chinese language. It is also an adverb but it is to indicate the affirmative tone by using rhetorical question. But the tone is euphemistic and it is equivalent to 不曾、并不是and难道. In addition, much attention should be paid to that 何尝indicates negative if it is placed before the positive form and indicates positive when being used before negative forms. You can make sentence like 他何尝不想帮助朋友,但是经济条件不允许.

If the overseas attend to the summer program in China, teachers might tell them that 不禁 is applied to show the meaning of failing to controlling something. It has the similar meaning with “can’t help doing something” in English. The subject of this word should be person like 想起当年母亲吃了那么多苦,孩子们不禁流下眼泪. In addition, single character is not allowed to put after it like 他不禁哭.

In reading process, the expression 被称作 is often seen when the writers intend to express that somebody has certain title or reputation. This pattern is a passive form. If we want to introduce the doer, we need to place it before 被. As a matter of fact, this pattern is similar with “be treated or regarded as”. For example, you can say 他是年青一代体操运动员中的佼佼者,被媒体称作”领军人物”.
