Lesson 18 – Advanced – Connect Disordered Sentences with Logic

The main purpose of reading is to get the useful information for the given materials. It means the foreigners who study in Mandarin language courses in China need to have strong ability in mastering the logic in the reading materials. A good way of practicing and improving this aspect is to connect the disordered sentences together logically. For example, the following sentences are provided for learners to make it a complete and logical sentence.

A. 人们将剪好的图案贴在门窗上
B. 剪纸是一种在纸上剪出来的画
C. 因此我们又称它为 窗花 
D. 以表达自己的喜乐爱好

First of all, you should know the meanings of the four segments. A means people stick the cut patterns on the window. B says paper-cut is a kind of painting cut on paper. C indicates the reason of calling it paper-cut for window decoration . D is to express people’s favors. Accordingly, foreign students who study Mandarin online may know 剪纸是… is the topic , thus putting at the beginning. A is the place paper should be pasted and D is the purpose of A while C is the conclusion of A. Therefore, it should be BADC.

A. 反倒爽快地议论姑娘们的身材特点
B. 她不仅不害羞
C. 我称赞她的衣服和身材
D. 以及自己应该如何打扮之类

In the same way, the first segment above carries the meaning of discussing the features of lady’s figure. The fragment B says she is not only not shy… . In the third one, I praised her clothes and figure . The learners who learn to speak Chinese should know D is how to dress up . After understanding the meanings of each fragment, students may feel it is easier to find the correct order.

According to the meanings, 不害羞 is said aiming at 称赞她的衣服和身材, hence C should be placed before B. The associative structure between B and A is 不仅不…反倒… and 以及… is part of what she discussing. Accordingly, it should be combined as CBDA.
