Lesson 11 – Advanced – Directional Complement and Position of the Object

There are two types of directional complement, the simple one and the compound one. You will learn the position of the object in this free Chinese lesson. When the simple directional complement is 来or去, the object of location should be placed after the verb and before 来or 去. If it is not 来or 去, the object should be after the complement. Here are some examples that you often see in free Chinese lesson: 回家去、上楼来、跑上楼、开回家.

In the compound directional complement, the objects of location should be placed between the complement. When teaching Chinese, teachers may tell you that the ordinary objects can also after the compound directional complement. Attention should be paid to that it expresses order or demand when the ordinary objects are between verbs and complements. When you learn in free Chinese lesson, you should also know that the compound directional complement 下去can’t be followed by objects. If the complement is 起来, the objects should be placed between it like 他抽起烟来.
