Since the first purpose of learning Chinese language in Mandarin learning courses is to learn to express what you want to say in Chinese, you should firstly know some common Chinese expressions. For instance, when you hear Chinese people say 还是我来吧, you should know the intention of the others. As a matter of fact, 还是…来吧is used in the case that when somebody can’t do something perfectly, it is suggested somebody else replace him. For instance, 我找不出电视的毛病在哪儿,还是你来吧.

还是老样子is also frequently used in daily life by Chinese people which is applied to show the case is the same as before and there is no change, with the same meaning of “remain the same” in English. For example, 十几年没见了,她还是老样子,和以前一样爱说爱笑. When foreigners study Mandarin online they may also often see the expression 还是老一套which is also used to indicate there is lack of change, but it emphasized lacing in creativity in content, form or method. It usually carries the tone of contempt or dissatisfaction. We can say今年的工作总结还是老一套,我听着都快睡着了.

Another important and common expression you should know is 还说呢, which is a rhetoric question meaning “do not mention it”, emphasizing the problem is not the speaker’s own fault. The following might be helpful. 甲:你怎么考得那么差?乙:还说呢,都是因为你,昨天跟我聊得那么晚,我都没好好复习. It carries the tone of annoying or coquettish anger and is used among the people who have intimate relationship.

When you greet Chinese friends in the morning when you learn Mandarin, they may answer like还行. In this case, you should know they mean to say it is comparatively good. We can also say这双鞋子还行,穿着挺舒服的. Sometimes the affirmative tone is stronger like 还行,在班里能排在第五名呢.
