The Guangzhou Flower Fair is held every year, starting three days before New Year’s Eve and ending the 1st day of the New Year. During the fair, the city becomes a sea of flowers, with people carrying them everywhere. The people of Guangzhou can’t celebrate the New Year properly without buying a cumquat, a daffodil, or even a small peach tree, and of course some fresh flowers to go along with them. Different flowers symbolize different things for the Cantonese. The peach blossom represents good luck and also luck in love. The daffodil represents purity, while the cumquat represents four seasons of good luck. The bell flower brings wealth and the camellia flower ensures a happy home.

The Pineapple Temple Fair is the largest festival in Guangzhou. The festival is held every year at Nanhai which is the temple of the God of the South China Sea. The festival lasts for 3 days; starting on the 11th day of the 2nd month of the lunar calendar. The custom was born during the Tang Dynasty when it was held in remembrance of an emissary from the Kingdom of Magadha. During the festival, people go to the temple to burn incense and buy Polo chicken, which is a sculpture and not a good dish. Legend has it, that one out of 100,000 Polo chickens can actually cluck. Whoever purchases that special Polo chicken is also said to be the recipient of good luck and happiness.
