Adjective is a common word class in language. But the application of adjectives is different in different languages. When the overseas students learn Chinese about the adjectives, they may be confused that the adjectives can be used as predicate. The adjectives in Chinese can be reduplicated and they can be used as the predicate. This kind of characteristic is different from English. Thus, the adjectives may cause some difficulty to the foreign students and the learning of the adjectives may be hard for the foreign students. There are different kinds of errors when using the adjectives. Let’s see them one by one.
Let’s discuss the first case of the error. When the single word of adjective is used as the predicate, some certain adverbs to modify the adjectives are missed. For example, when the foreign students translate the sentence I am well, they often translate the sentence into 我好. When the Chinese heart the sentence 你好, they may have the feeling that the words of the speaker have not finished. The foreign students in free Chinese lessons must know that the adjective has the comparison tint when the adjective is used singly. For example, the Chinese may say 他认真,他不认真. Thus, when the foreign students translate the sentence well, they should translate it into 我很好instead 我好.
Let’s move to the second case of adjective error. The error is that the foreign students often add an object after the adjective. For example, the sentence 她很友好我们 is wrong because the adjective 友好 can not be followed by the object 我们. The right sentence is 她对我们很友好. Another example will reinforce the understanding. the sentence 这件衣服很适合你 is wrong. The right sentence should be 这件衣服很适合你.
The third case of the adjective error is that the foreign students often use the adverb+ adjective and ignore the word 的. For example, the sentence 我是不认真学生 is wrong. The sentence should be changed into 我是一个不认真的学生. When the foreign students use the pattern adverb+ adjective to modify nouns, the word 的must be added. The fourth case of the adjective error is the reduplication of the adjectives. For example, the sentence 那个女孩眼睛很大大的. The word 很should be deleted. Thus, the right sentence should be 那个女孩眼睛大大的. The fifth case of the adjective error is the improper collocation of the words. For example, the sentence 医生告诉我们爷爷的病很严肃. The word 严肃is wrong and should be corrected into 严重.
When the foreign students learn adjectives in Chinese, they should bear the different kinds of errors in mind and avoid the mistakes in the learning process.
