Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, known as “Duanwu Festival” is on May 5 in the lunar calendar. The festival has a long history with thousands of years and it is one of the most important festivals. In order to celebrate the festival, Chinese people make sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. The most ceremonious event is the Dragon Boat Race, which is anctivities nowadays to encourage people to do more workouts.

The origin of Dragon Boat Festival has different versions. First, it is said that the festival is to commemorate the poet Qu Yuan, while some people think it is to memorialize Wu Zixu, a famous official in the Warring States Period.

The legend about Qu Yuan is the most widely accepted. Qu Yuan commited suicide in the river to express his dissappoinment of the government and his love to the country.

Keats School celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival every year by providing our students the sticky rice dumplings and garlic. It is said that the garlic would bring us good furtune and we will never get sick in the following year.
