Describing and Expressing with Long Chinese Sentences

Generally speaking, it is not an easy job for overseas students to learn Chinese, especially when it comes to the sentences. But if some teaching techniques are properly used, it will prove to be wrong.

Here is a very attracting game to play when learning Chinese sentences for the beginners who make up his mind to study Chinese. By this way, students can review the words learned before and improve the ability to recognize the characters written by hands.

This game will be played by confusing one thing with another if you study in China. First of all, everyone writes his or her name on a piece of paper, then roll them and put it into the first empty bowl. Secondly, students write a place on another piece of paper such as “在教室”, “在火车上”, “在礼堂” and so on. And finally write down some things you do in daily life on the third paper like “写字”, “洗澡”, “睡觉”, “吃饭” etc. When prepared, everyone take out one paper in each bowel, and put them together and read it.

What happen in the following will make it interesting to learn Mandarin Chinese. After the papers are messed up and then put them together, a series of funny joke will be produced to active the classroom atmosphere. For example, it may happen like this: “大卫在火车上洗澡”.

In order to cultivate students’ capability of describing thins and actions when they study Mandarin Chinese, we take a measure to train students to be perceptive of the minutest detail.

The teacher first shows a picture or an object to the students for a while and then asks students to speak out or write down what they saw without looking at it. To reach the goal to learn Mandarin, students are supposed to describe the details as soon as possible such as the color, quantity, shape and position, etc.

Teachers should choose the pictures according to the level of students who learn Chinese in China. For example, if students just learned the usage of “的”, teachers can choose some materials like “老师的书” and “好看的电影”. That is to say, to teach students in accordance of their aptitude.

By this way, students can learn Chinese language by themselves because they can learn Chinese online free. They can find many pictures on the Internet.

In order to encourage students to study Chinese positively, we can take a measure to stimulate the interest, let’s say, to take things back. Teachers collect some things from the students like pens, books, watches to the platform. Only when students speak the correct sentences can they take their things back. As long as students can say “这是我的……” or “这……是我的”, they can take them back after they say “谢谢”. For some students who have learned Chinese before, teacher can ask them to pick up one thing and ask “这是谁的……”, and another answer “这是我的……” or “这不是我的……, 那是我的……”. Every student who wants to take things back should ask one question to another. This is helpful to review what they have just learned.

To improve students’ capability of expressing complex sentences, teachers can teach them by expanding the words and phrases to sentences. Teachers can firstly speak one key word and ask students to add modifier to make it a phrase. When the phrase expanded longer, some additional components can be added to form a complete sentence. The student who wants to add should repeat the former part completed. This method is also appropriate for one-on-one Chinese learning programs.

For example: 书→中文书→一本中文书→一本很便宜的中文书→一本大陆出的很便宜的中文书→……→昨天我和我弟弟在旧金山的书店买了一本大陆出的很便宜的中文书. Of course, teachers should correct the mistakes if there are some and stop when it become long because students may be confused. For students, they should build Chinese learning programs to practice it regularly.
