A Brief Introduction to Shanxi Jinci Museum

In the southwestern mountain foot of Taiyuan city in Shanxi province, there many historical and cultural heritages with the combination of ancient Chinese sacrificing architectures, gardens, statues, cliff paintings and inscription art. Those are not only the unique and only precious heritages, but also symbolize the outstanding chapter of the magnificent and fantastic world architectures, gardens and sculptures during the period from the 7th century to 12th century.

Being established in the Western Zhou Period about in the 11th century, Jinci is the ancestral temple constructed for the purpose of sacrificing the duke Ji Yu of Tang State in the Western Zhou Dynasty. Some of the overseas students who are interested when they learn Mandarin in China might have learned that the book named Commentary on the Waterways Classic written by Li Daoyuan records that Jinci has had a large scale as early as 1500 years ago. After experiencing the periods such as north Qi, Sui, Tang, the Five Dynasties, Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, Qing and the Republic of China which lasted for more than 2000 years, it has been modified and expanded to form the ancestral hall with large scale.

However, the most prosperous period was in the phase from the 7th century to the 12th century, making it the sample of ancient architectures and gardens and also carving art in Tang and Song Dynasties. The existing relics perfectly preserved include the stone tablets in the peak Tang period and more than one hundred ancient architectures in Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing. The most obvious one is the main architecture the Goddess Temple, which is regarded as the only representative architecture sample with the unique typicality in the Northern Song Dynasty.

The statue group protected in the Goddess Temple broke through the model of the religious statues in the period before Song period, making it the portrayal of the real person. Some of the students who come to study in Chinese school in China might be told that it is the symbol of initiating the statue realism works and it is not only the only statues group that reflect the imperial figures but also the rare fine art works with extraordinary skills in the history of Chinese statues.

Many other ancestral temples are incomparable to Jinci Ancestral Hall because it has long history, good geographical location and also beautiful scenery. On the basis of a number of architectures, statues, stone tablets and cliff paintings as well as plants, it reflects the development and changes of the society in ancient China.
