The Zhou Yi we usually talking about have the differences in narrow sense and broad sense. The narrow one refers to Yijing completed between Shang and Zhou Dynasty. While the broad one includes Yizhuan besides Yijing.
Fengshui culture in Chinese culture and the creation of Zhou Yi have close relationship. They seem to supplement each other. Indeed, Zhou Yi which was based on the other ancient books, its conclusion to the ancestors’ historic practice is far more than this activity of choosing living places; the conclusion of its symbolic system to thousands of things are more than those references and conditions of choosing living places such as mountains, rivers, wind and rain. But just as we have seen when we are dating from the origin of Fengshui culture, the main social practice of our ancestors focuses on the activities of satisfying the basic necessities of life, to get clothes and food, to make traffic convenient, to develop the family and tribes, all the activities are around the theme of living and working in peace and contentment and can’t ignore the finding, choosing, building and reforming of living conditions. After these, activities like migration, wars, ancestor worship, etiquette systems, ideas and arts all belong to superstructure and activities with the field of ideological forms. They are all built upon this. It is still the same even it entered into the class society.
For this principle, we can see by analyzing the history of Xia Dynasty from Chinese culture. All the archaeological achievements and materials indicate that the migration of Xia people was quite frequent. But generally speaking, all the migrations happened in the West Henan centered with the current Yanshi, Henan Province. The living conditions chose by Xia people were mainly near the river banks or gentle slopes near water source. The legends about the ancient leaders of tribes choosing living places all happened in this area. It is because the excellent natural geographic environment of this area that Xia people created the bright and outstanding material civilization of Xia Dynasty, such as the irrigation farming, superb liquor making technology and emerging handicrafts and so on. Based on the material civilization, etiquette system, science, culture and ideology were created and developed and they were directly related with the improvement of living conditions. For example, the achievement of astronomical calendar in Xia Dynasty benefited from the measuring on the orientation of constructions; the funeral customs and sacrifices to spirits was derived from the concept of choosing living places to cheer ancestors and get protection from them; and the complete social hierarchical system was a copy of the ordered construction arrangement. In addition to these, the development of dancing, singing, musical instruments, costumes and appreciation of the beauty is closely related to the styles of ceremonies for construction. We can see this point from old words like, “方夷来宾,献其乐舞”, “女乐充宫室,文绣衣裳”. These sentences describe the relationship between dancing, music and ceremonies as well as the relationship between clothing styles and ceremonies.
Besides, during the four hundred years since Xia Dynasty was established, all the wars happened between tribes and families concentrated on capturing treasure places. According to the historic materials related to Chinese culture, when Tai Kang lost his empire, the King Xiang of Xia Dynasty was pursued closely by another tribe named Qiong. King Xiang moved the capital to another places for several times even arrived at the current Guancheng, Shandong. But after his son Shaokang took his Xiang’s throne and became the King of Xia Dynasty, King Shaokang moved the capital from the present Yucheng, Henan to Jiyuan, Henan and fought back to the original capital in Yanshi, West Henan Provice. This was thought highly of by Chinese people.
All things like this obviously indicate that because of the limitation of survival means, our ancestors used to put the choosing and managing of living conditions on the top of every activity. Other activities were all derived from this. Ancient people were so insistent on treasure places, whose reasons can be found from the history in this ancient time.
