If you’ve been to Chinese villages or towns, you may find that on the front door of a house, there is always a mirror hanging on the door, Chinese named it “Baojing” (a magic mirror). Mirror is originally among living goods. But the mirror here is a mascot. It mainly functions as exorcising evil spirits and bringing peace. In the wedding ceremony of ancient times, the bride was expected to carry a mirror in her clothes, and it can often be found in the bridal chamber for the sake of exorcising evil spirits and protecting the newly-weds. In Beijing, mirror was also used in the rites of “Third-day-wash”. After the wash, the midwife uses a mirror near the babies, as a blessing of a healthy and sound growth. Chinese also has a taboo about mirror. That is: you can’t put the mirror in front of your bed, even let the bed reflected in the mirror. That will bring bad luck to the person.
